On April 28, 2016, our lives were irrevocably changed by a small fever and side ache. We took our 7 year-old daughter, Cecilia, to her pediatrician to check out the side ache and were redirected to the hospital for CT scans. The preliminary diagnosis was a "small" 7 cm mass in her left abdomen. After pushing to speak with a doctor, we were advised that we were most likely dealing with a Wilms Tumor and consults were immediately set up for the following morning at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. On April 29, we met with a pediatric surgeon and oncologist to determine a course of action. We were shown the scans taken the night before and the mass looked anything but small (the 7cm measurement we were given appeared to be the diameter of the mass). They advised that they were 98% sure this was a Wilms Tumor and began to delve into when surgery could be scheduled and what Cecilia's radiation and chemo treatments would likely look like. On May 3 Cecilia's tumor was removed. It weighed between 4-5 pounds and was the size of a medium pineapple. The surgical team was able to remove the entire tumor, her left kidney, and part of her diaphragm. The tumor did rupture, so radiation would be necessary. Thankfully her lungs were not affected, but because two lymph nodes were infected, she has be diagnosed with a Stage 3 Wilms Tumor. On May 9, we were discharged from the hospital. We returned the following day for a radiation consult and her first round of chemo. 6 radiation treatments are scheduled, starting on May 13. Cecilia needs to undergo 25 rounds of Chemo. She is currently in Week 9.
